Annual Awards for Achievement 2008

Corporate Supporter of the Year 2008

Winner - SJ Berwin

European law firm SJ Berwin has won an award for achievement by employment charity Tomorrow's People.

SJ Berwin has won the category 'Corporate Supporter Of The Year' and representatives of the firm attended the annual Awards for Achievement ceremony at Plaisterers' Hall on Wednesday 12th November. The Awards pay tribute to those who have overcome significant barriers in their quest to find employment.

Tomorrow's People is the SJ Berwin 'Charity of the Year' 2007/2008, during which period, the law firm has supported the charity in a variety of ways. SJ Berwin felt that the partnership was a perfect fit with their Corporate Social Responsibility strategy which focuses on "unlocking people's potential to excel". They decided that their fundraising activities would support the Tomorrow's People 'Working It Out' programme, which targets socially-excluded and marginalised young people aged 16-24 in Southwark, , near to the firms London headquarters..

SJ Berwin has made enormous efforts to engage their staff in the Tomorrow's People mission and build interest in the work of the charity. Throughout the year specialist lawyers at SJ Berwin have supported Tomorrow's People with bro bono work which has been absolutely invaluable. At all levels staff have been enthusiastic and generous in giving their time and the principle of matched funding meaning that all money raised by staff for Tomorrow's People is doubled by the firm.

Throughout the year there have been numerous fundraising activities - nine members of staff ran in the Flora London Marathon in April raising over 18,000 and in June, 40 people participated in a Paris to London cycle which raised over 34,000.

SJ Berwin and Tomorrow's People will continue to work together on several projects, including 'Gearing Up For Work', where staff donate high quality work-wear to Tomorrow's People clients, enabling them to make the right impression at an interview and in the first few weeks of work. Tomorrow's People will also form part of SJ Berwin's 'Community Charity programme', which means that we will continue to work together on the Working It Out programme in Southwark.
