In July 2010 Tank Consulting evaluated the Tomorrow's People programme for young people aged 16-24, Working It Out.
They found that Working It Out is successfully supporting a group of especially disadvantaged young people who are not in employment, education or training (known as NEET) to positive outcomes. Reducing the NEET group is a priority for the Westminster and Scottish governments - the report concluded that Working It Out is a successful approach that is well placed to achieve this.
Tank Consulting reported that Tomorrow's People had designed an effective programme that is distinctly different from classroom-based provision, with a very good record of engaging and keeping young people involved throughout the 16 weeks.
On average, 80% of young people complete the programme. Of those, 79% progressed to employment, further education or training. This compares very positively with other agencies.
More than three quarters (77%) were still in education, employment or training six months later.
The programme is distinctly different from classroom based provision, yet still viewed as well-run and professional.
Community challenges are central to the programme. There are many advantages of this approach. Young people show what they are really capable of doing and challenge negative perceptions. Community resources and outside space is improved. Local charitable organisations benefit.
Young people are very positive about their experience with the programme, leading to further word of mouth referrals.
