Tackling Inter-Generational Unemployment
Our Employment Advisers work in a completely new way within inter-generational workless families to transform their prospects.
There are families in the UK where no one in three generations has ever worked. Tomorrow's People have taken on the challenge of finding a solution to inter-generational unemployment, one of society's most stubborn problems.
Research we commissioned in 2009 shows the solution lies beyond working with individuals, who may fear that starting work will reduce the family's overall income through benefit. Rather, we believe the challenges and the solutions lie within the family as a whole.
We have established a two-year pilot project in which we embed our Employment Advisers on one estate in Maidstone, Kent. Our Advisers will work intensively with unemployed families to move them forward into work or other community or voluntary activity.
Our aim is to pioneer a completely new approach that will demonstrate that it is possible to turn around entrenched worklessness.
